Yukio Tanaka, born in Ashiya, Japan, 1952, started his filmmaking career in 1976 at a video production company. He has worked for commercial 16/35mm films, dramas, and TV programs as a director/writer/camera/producer. Tanaka has made over 500 programs in Japan including international programs, “World Pilgrimages, Africa, India, France” (90min, Special program of 50th anniversary, Mainich TV), “A bicycle journey in Silk Road” (75min, *NHK), “Crossing Taklamakan Desert”(45min). “Saving refugees in Asia-Africa, UNICEF campaign ” (30min). Tanaka is a successful award-winner. “Hello Nippon” (20min, NHK) got a Sakata award. “Kame no Ayumi de Iijyanai: a film about women’s NPO ”(30min) got two awards, Director General of Economic Planning Agency Award and Jury Award. “80th anniversary of Kishiwada City” (30min) got the 1st prize of Osaka commercial film festival. “From Kisiwada to San Francisco” (30min) selected a nominee of *J.S.C. Award. Since 1985, Yukio Tanaka started to focus on documentaries, especially about human rights issues, such as *Buraku, Korean Japanese, and other minorities. One of his best-selling films which captures discrimination in Japan is “Cry and Whisper- Discrimination and False Accusation” (45min). It has sold over 1200 copies, mostly to educational organizations in Japan. A 16mm film drama “It begins in the last”(60min), a story about a Buraku boy with a stutter, was selected as one of the best educational films by Ministry of Education. “Unreasonable”(30min) was the first documentary in Japan to capture the Korean Japanese’s war reparation trial. “Portrait of a Korean Japanese”(45min), filmed over a 7 year period, follows the struggle of a Korean Japanese girl and her family. * Buraku is a discriminated community of descendants of outcast groups * NHK is the public broadcaster in Japan and the largest broadcaster in Asia *J.F.C. : Japanese Society of Cinematographers.
